Directories and their largest Audiance

Hello All,

Today I wanted to make mention of something that's been bothering me.

As I mentioned in my intro post, I was considering getting into the Directory business. (one Directory only)

What got my interest was SitePoint.com they sell websites by auction. They had a listing there offering for sale a directory (I won't name names) I checked out the site and it seemed reasonably laid out and so on. Had an Alexa ranking of 154,000 there abouts and PR5.

I should point out that the reason I did get interested in such a site was for traffic purposes. I have a Canadian Bed and Breakfast and Vacation Rental site that list properties and I was looking to drive traffic to the site by being the major sponsor on a heavy traffic site. (I've had one heck of a time trying to figure out how to get traffic to my site, I've tried everything)

Here's the thing that's been bothering me:

1) For the site I was interested in the Alex ratings page indicated that over 60% of the traffic came from INDIA, and the second largest % came from Pakistan.

2) This sites Alex ranking went from 26,000,000 to 157,000 in less then 3 months.

After seeing this bells and whistles went off.

I decided to dig deeper into this...and in the process I checked many many, PR5 and PR4 Directories Alexa traffic details, and found over 80% of them had the same type of traffic...India, Pakistan, and then the rest of the world. A lot of the directories Alexa Ranking have also spiked upwards.

I have my own thoughts as to why this anomaly exists, but I would sure like to hear some explanations from forum discussions like this one.
